Texas OU - Red River Rivalry

10-06-08
With OU/TX less than a week away, who can hold in their excitement? The Red Rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners is an old and exciting tradition that dates back to 1905. The Rivalry between the Sooners and Longhorns will be played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas Texas on October 11, 2008. The Oklahoma VS Texas rivalry started in 1905 before the Longhorns and Sooners were widely known and while Oklahoma was still a United States Territory. Up until the 2005 meeting, which marked the 100th meeting between Texas and Oklahoma, the game was called the Red River Shootout. From 2005 on, OU VS Texas has been called The Red River Rivalry. The OU/Texas game is ranked third out of all the college games nationwide and has been played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas since 1912, a neutral site that is approximately halfway between Austin Texas, and Norman, Oklahoma. The selected home team alternates between Oklahoma and Texas from year to year. The Cotton Bowl stadium seats about 79,000 fans, each side filled with either burnt orange or crimson and cream. The stadium will soon be renovated and the capacity will increase to more than 90,000 fans. Mack Brown began his 11th season as head coach for the Texas Longhorns on a winning start. The Longhorns kicked off their season opener against the Florida Atlantic Owls. Starting quarterback, Colt McCoy, played an amazing game, throwing 222 yards and 3 touchdowns, ultimately defeating the Owls 52-10. The Longhorns winning streak didn’t stop there; they went on to defeat UTEP, Rice, and Arkansas by at least 30 points in each game. Texas’s last game against Colorado was also victorious. On the third play of the game, senior running back Chris Ogbannaya caught a 65 yard pass from Colt McCoy to score the first touchdown for the Texas Longhorns. Ogbannaya’s tremendous plays helped the Undefeated Longhorns defeat Colorado 38-14. The Longhorns are feeling very confident with their undefeated season climbing rank age, but will it be enough to stop the Oklahoma Sooners? Bob Stoops has full faith in his Sooners, who are currently ranked number 1 by AP Top 25 Poll. Oklahoma kicked off their season against the Chattanooga Mocs. Starting quarterback, Sam Bradford had an amazing first game, throwing 183 yards and two touchdowns. By the end of the first quarter, the Sooners had scored 4 touchdowns, making it 28-0. The only thing stopping Oklahoma was a thunderstorm that extended the second half by over an hour. In the end, the Sooners ended up defeating Colorado 52-2. In weeks following the Sooners opener, Oklahoma continued to control the boards against Cincinnati, Washington, and TCU defeating each team by 20 points or more. The Sooners opening game for the Big 12 Conference was against the Baylor Bears. Oklahoma knew what they had to do to keep their number 1 spot and continue their undefeated season. They needed to fight hard hard, be aggressive, and outsmart the Bears, which is exactly what they did. Bradford threw for 372 yards and two touchdowns, making it 28-0 in the first quarter and coming out with a win over the Baylor Bears 49-17. Texas and Oklahoma are two very tough teams that will fight it out until the end. The traditional OU vs. Texas game will be one of the top games of the year. Don’t miss you opportunity to see the Undefeated Oklahoma Sooners take on the undefeated Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, TX at 12:00 P.M.
