Red River Rivalry 2008 - Texas OU Game

08-20-08
The Red River Rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will be played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas on October 11, 2008. The Oklahoma VS Texas rivalry started in 1905 before the Longhorns and Sooners were widely known and while Oklahoma was still a United States Territory. Up until the 2005 meeting, which marked the 100th meeting between Texas and Oklahoma, the game was called the Red River Shootout. From 2005 on, OU VS Texas has been called The Red River Rivalry. The OU-Texas game is ranked third out of all the college games nationwide and has been played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas since 1912, a neutral site that is approximately halfway between Austin Texas, and Norman, Oklahoma. The selected home team alternates between Oklahoma and Texas from year to year. The Cotton Bowl stadium seats about 79,000 fans, each side filled with either burnt orange or crimson and cream. The stadium will soon be renovated and the capacity will increase to more than 90,000 fans. Bob Stoops returns for his ninth season as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. As of now, Stoops is the only sooner coach to lead his first three teams to a bowl game. Sophomore Sam Bradford will be returning as starting quarterback for the Sooners. He currently holds the NCAA record for touchdown passes by a freshman. Bradford owes much of his success to his offensive line, who was voted preseason choice for college football’s best unit in 2007. The Sooners will have five senior offensive linemen returning this season, giving Bradford plenty of coverage to work his magic. Oklahoma is currently number 4 in preseason ranking. Returning for his third year as the Texas Longhorns starting quarterback is Colt McCoy. He ranked as the nation’s fourth best quarterback entering 2007 and the preseason Big 12 Most Valuable Player. McCoy was also the first freshman to win 10 games in Texas Longhorn history. Mack Brown will begin his 11th season as the head coach for the Texas Longhorns. He is currently the best winning percentage of any coach in Longhorn history. Brown also became the second coach in Texas history to reach the 100-win Plateau, joining Darrel Royal, who played quarterback for Oklahoma and later became head coach of the Texas Longhorns. Both Oklahoma and Texas poses great talent that will make for an excellent game that no one will want to miss.
